In this article I found
it interesting how Bartlett turn something ugly into 200 pieces of art. She
gave up her apartment in New York City to move to Nice. She ended up being in
the wrong part of town and also ended up with an ugly garden to look at.
Instead of giving up and moving back to NYC she turned an ugly garden into art
and made it beautiful. This whole
article talks about the big idea and in my opinion Bartlett turned something
useless into a big idea to use in her artwork. I also found it interesting how
one big idea was used for 200 different artworks.
I didn’t find anything to problematic in this article. If
anything you could argue that in the last paragraph or two when it talks about
Brice Marden, they quote Marden saying that he could paint one way for the rest
of his life but that would be boring. Which is totally opposite of Bartlett. Or
you could say they put that in this article to show how hard it was for
Bartlett to do over 200 drawings of the same big idea. Just because she has
drawn it a 100 times doesn’t mean it gets easier. If anything it gets harder
because you want the next drawing to look better and say more than the last.

I this article I liked how they did this interpretation
exercise with different age groups. I would it interesting that even child the
age of three and four could point out denotation and connotation of their teddy
bear. By having these students do this it also teaches them to think deeper
into everyday objects. In my opinion it also teaches more of the younger
children that we see things the way say maybe a company wants us to see them.
What I found problematic in this article is that the magazine
cover was being over analyzed. When discussing there outfits and ultimately
deciding that they are masters of sex and that if they want sex they will be in
charge was over doing it. They were
appealing at a sexual angle but I would go as far as saying they are preparing
for sex.
